Pioneering forest protection through sustainable cocoa production

Ghana has long been one of the world’s leading cocoa producers, but decades of deforestation have degraded its tropical forests, threatened farming livelihoods and undermined agricultural productivity. Protecting these forests is critical to sustaining cocoa production, supporting rural communities and tackling climate change.

Through its jurisdictional REDD+ programme, Ghana is tackling deforestation through sustainable agroforestry, forest restoration and stronger community-led forest management. By incentivising cocoa farmers to plant shade trees, the programme helps restore forests while improving crop yields and incomes, with benefits reaching more than 300,000 farmers across 1,600 communities.
